FIGHTING ENVIRONMENTAL CRIME IN WEST PAPUA

Towards legal accountability, the workshop brought together leading West Papuan and international researchers, activists, and lawyers, and University of Tromsø faculty and students engaged in Sápmi and Indigenous contexts. It sought to promote an open exchange of ideas and expertise to improve the capacity for legal and human rights advocacy on fighting environmental crime in West Papua with a special attention on seeking legal accountability for the socio- environmental impacts from Grasberg mine and the use of emerging forms of evidence.As well as this focus, the workshop aimed to look at ways of supporting Indigenous and local communities in their struggle to protect their livelihoods and seek justice and accountability in relation to the Grasberg mine.
